Make Your Fitness Story A Success Story

Hello. I started the exercise part of Sexy in 6 two weeks ago, and I started the diet a couple of days ago. For the past two days, when I've tried to eat the three servings of dairy, I've had let's just say issues relating to being lactose intolerant. Are there any other alternatives? I know I could eat soy, but one of my younger sisters was diagnosed with breast cancer two years ago, and her doctor told her to avoid all soy, so I'm kind of nervous about eating a lot of soy. I do take a calcium supplement with 600 mg of calcium plus Vitamin D, but are there other food options?
Thank you!

Hi Heather.

I'm also lactose intolerant and prefer to keep away from soy for other reasons, so my alternative is Rice milk. I use plain b/c the vanilla flavor tastes a bit weird to me (when used in cereal). The brand I buy is Rice Dream, b/c it comes in a 64oz container and is fortified with vitamins A, B12, D and Calcium.

Another option is almond milk -- so yummy. I had put this option on hold though b/c my daughter has a slight intolerance to nuts and it drives me crazy to see her skin get blotchy after I've had nuts and she has had my breast milk.

So yeah, I'd say try rice or almond milk.

Good luck.

Actually, I just bought those this morning! I was surprised at how much I liked the rice milk! That will definitely be a good option for me. I also tried some unsweetened chocolate almond milk, and I didn't care for that. I think I'll try a different variety of almond milk before I make a final decision about it. I've been drinking the lactaid milk for awhile, and that's been a lifesaver for me. I also take milk digestant pills before I eat dairy and they work pretty well -- as long as I remember to take one before I eat dairy (which I'm bad about doing).
Thanks!

I can't believe I didn't even list this as an alternative: Lactose Free Milk. I actually don't use it b/c I just don't like the taste of milk, but if you do -- this is a great alternative if you're lactose free.

ahhh.. morning brain. Can't wait to fully wake up.

I don't really like the taste of milk, either, but lactose free milk does come in handy when I have cereal for breakfast.

Here are the suggestions in the Dietary Guidelines for Americans (USDA 2005), within the dairy group they also suggest lactose free milk, which Chris has mentioned, and yogurt.

Thanks! That was interesting to see how much seafood was on the list.
